How to care for your tree ferns

Tree ferns are surprisingly easy to care for once established in a suitable location. Younger, smaller plants usually require partial shade, especially during the middle of the day. Older, taller tree ferns will be able to withstand longer duration in the sun because in real-life, they would be breaking through the canopy and be more exposed to the sun. Most tree ferns prefer a sheltered site to look their best, but can thrive even in coastal conditions as long as they are protected from fierce wind.

Some tree ferns are more susceptible to frost, so ask us which tree ferns are suitable if you live in colder regions. If possible, protect younger tree ferns from frost until they are older – even frost hardy ones. Tui organic seaweed plant tonic (available at most garden centres) can be sprayed at regular intervals from Easter until Labour weekend to help save your tree fern from frost damage. While frost won’t kill many tree ferns, the fronds can be scorched.

Tree ferns can benefit from regular application of nutritious compost and/or an all round balanced plant fertiliser. At Fernz we usually use Osmocote, which is applied 2 x per year. If your fern is looking a little tired and you want to give it a treat, an application of Tui organic seaweed plant tonic or urea can work wonders by greening up the plant. Once applied, the plant will look much better in about one month.

If needed, some tree ferns can be easily transplanted – even larger grades. In addition, if your tree fern has become too tall, we can advise on how best to reduce its height, without killing your plant. For advice, please get in touch on our contact page.

Finally, many people do not realise that the trunk of a tree fern is actually its root. This means that it is important to water the whole plant, including the trunk. This is especially important in summer, when the air is drier and rain is less frequent.
